The Fall Feasts                                                               Previous Lesson
Part 3

This re-gathering is a call for Israel to return to God. Although this holiday has been recognized historically as a time of repentance, it looks forward prophetically to a re-gathering of the people to the coming of Messiah. The greatest harvest of fruit will take place during those days that precede His second coming, when the harvest of souls will produce “new wine”. RR

Tishrei which is our September is the first month that begins the New Year on the Jewish civil calendar.  On the biblical calendar Tishrei is the seventh month. Rosh HaShanah is also thought of as the birthday of the world by the Jewish sages.1   The reason for this is that the Hebrew words for “In the beginning” are Aleph b’ Tishrei or “on the first of Tishrei.  Not only is the first of Tishrei thought to be the birthday of the world and the birthday of Adam, but it has been well established by the late Dr. Earnest L. Martin that the first of Tishrei is the Birthday of our Lord in the year 3 B.C. 2  For more about how the evidence of scripture points to Rosh HaShanah as the day of our Lord’s birth, see the “manna from heaven that is hidden in plain sight”, in the study, The Relationship between Hanukkah and Christmas.

The first of Tishrei is the festival called by many names, Rosh HaShanah the most common. The Lord told Moses to call the people together for this appointed time.

Lev 23:24 which says this:  Speak to the children of Israel saying, in the seventh month on the first day of the month, you shall have a Sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.

Israel was in peace for 40 years after Sisera’s death. 4  In a traditional service the first blowing occurs immediately after the reading of the Torah, the second thirty notes are blown at the end of the Amidah prayer, one of the cornerstones of the service; and the last 40 notes occur at the end of the service. There is always a great deal of anticipation to see how long the last note is held. There is in fact something very exhilarating about being a witness to this awesome sound. To hear the sound of the shofar is considered a commandment in Judaism for the men, the woman and children however are exempt. The blast of the shofar (rams horn) is often referred to as the “Trump” or trumpet, and to hear the sound of the shofar (trumpet) is considered a blessing.

Psalm 89:15 How blessed are the people that know the joyful sound!

So the people blessed are those that hear the joyful sound of the shofar blast on the Feast of Trumpets also known as Rosh HaShanah.  Remember what we have been taught about all these feasts, they are rehearsals for the real thing. The people blessed at the sound of the shofar on Rosh HaShanah were those who recognized the day of His visitation when the sound of the shofar ushered in the King of Kings at His birth. Once again the sound of the shofar will usher in the King of Kings. The people most blessed will be those that are waiting to hear and will hear that sound on Rosh HaShanah that will spilt the Eastern skies!  Hallelujah!

Some of these hints or remez in the New Testament that point to Yom Teruah (the Feast of Trumpets) as the day of the rapture of the Bride and the wedding of the Messiah are found in:

Matt. 24: 30-31 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

1 Cor 15:51-52 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed- 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

1 Thess 4:15-17  For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

I think that it is important to point out something from the above scripture.  The word for shout comes from the Hebrew word teruah which is better translated “alarm”.  This is taken to mean a certain sound or note from the Shofar.  It will be that certain note that will be the sound of the rapture.

Isaiah prophesied about this re-gathering in the seventh century B.C.E. when he spoke about this happening on Yom Teruah which is the day of the great trumpet, and is recorded for us as the following:

Is. 27:12-13  And it shall come to pass in that day That the LORD will thresh, From the channel of the River to the Brook of Egypt; And you will be gathered one by one, O you children of Israel. 13 So it shall be in that day: The great trumpet will be blown; They will come, who are about to perish in the land of Assyria, And they who are outcasts in the land of Egypt, And shall worship the LORD in the holy mount at Jerusalem.

In my research for this study, I found an interesting quote from a commentary that dates back to the 8th century C. E. that reads like this:

Messiah Ben David (son of David) Elijah and Zerubbabel peace by upon him will ascend the Mount of Olives.  And Messiah will command Elijah to blow the shofar.  The light of the six days of creation will return and will be seen. the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and God will send full healing to all the sick of Israel, The second blast which Elijah will blow will make the dead rise.  They will rise from the dust and each man will recognize his fellow man, and so will husband and wife, father and son, brother and brother.  All will come to the Messiah from the four corners of the earth, from east to west, from north and from south.  The children of Israel will fly on the wings of eagles and come to the Messiah… (Ma’ase Daniel as quoted in Patai. P.143) 5

My point in drawing the thoughts of this commentary to your intention is to stress the fact that the idea of a rapture is not just a Christian doctrine. Ancient sources reveal that the people of God were looking for the Messiah to gather them unto Himself, and time and time again that re-gathering was linked to the sound of the shofar. May you and I be awake and able to hear that blessed sound when “that day” appears.

The Fall Feasts
Rosh Hashanah
Yom Teruah
The Feast of Trumpets
Part 3

Rosh HaShanah is known by many names. Some of these Jewish names for Rosh HaShanah speak volumes to us on why it is necessary to have repented before this day. We will examine each name briefly. The most common name is the Jewish New Year. Rosh means head and Shanah means year. Therefore it is the head of the year, or the New Year. At the time of Moses and forward, the society revolved around the seasons of harvest. In the fall of the year was the harvesting of fruit, most importantly, the fruit of the vine, grapes.  The agricultural year began in the fall, thus this time began to be called the New Year.  Rosh HaShanah is known as the day of repentance as well as the 30 days leading up to it. It is thought to be a time of re-gathering.
Another name for this day is the Day of the Wakening Blast or the Feast of Trumpets, known in Hebrew as Yom Teruah. Yom Teruah means the day of the blowing. The Shofar is blown 100 times on this day. The 100 blasts represent the 100 cries of the mother of Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army who did not return home after being assassinated by the Jael. 3
