How to be Born Again
Upon searching the internet on how to be born again you will find many fine articles about the subject. The Billy Graham website has a wonderful article, as do many other fine men and women of God. My purpose in writing this article is to share with you my own personal observation of the experience as it happened to me and with others as I observed it happening to them.
Being born again is an experience with God that is a mystery and there is no Theologian that can amply explain it. Every person that is headed for heaven and eternal life with God must be born twice. First we are born into this world physically; this is being born or water. Then Jesus made it clear that we must be born a second time. This second birth is the born again experience. It is being born of the Spirit of God. Being born of the Spirit is the work of the Holy Spirit and nothing that man can do or tries to do can accomplish this.
When the Holy Spirit has been born in you...you know it. You know it because without even trying your thinking begins to change. Not only does your thinking change, but so do your desires. Sinful things that you use to enjoy doing suddenly lose their pleasure. Habits that kept you in bondage drop off sometimes without your awareness. One day you wake up and realize you have changed for the better.
Some people know the exact day or hour that they became “born again,” others, like me, cannot pin point it. For me it was a gradual awareness of Spiritual things. I was searching for the truth and the meaning of life...but often I searched in all the wrong places. In the beginning of my search I am sorry to say that I dabbled in the kingdom of darkness unaware. I thought that all spiritual awareness was from the God of creation. I soon learned that this was not the case. Satan has his ways of deceiving us to keep us from the TRUTH...which is another topic..for another time. Fortunately the Lord has a standard that is designed to keep us from the deception of Satan. That standard is the Bible!
I had tried to read the Bible many times, but it just did not do anything for me. I found it uninteresting and difficult to understand. That is because it is the Holy Spirit that opens up our understanding and without the Holy Spirit to guide us the book is a dead history book. Once however the Spirit of God takes His residence within the heart of a man or woman this book full of love letters comes alive. I had a supernatural experience with God and He put a New Testament in my hand that changed the way I felt about the Bible. This account can be found in the Glory Experiences on the website. Many people want to have a relationship with God, but they think that they need to clean up their act first. Then try as they may they find this to be an impossible task and believe the lie that God does not want them as they are. The truth is that God loves you just the way you are and He loves you far too much to leave you this way. He is looking for a family to shower His love upon and a family to love Him back. He knew from the beginning of time that mankind would fail and fall short of His requirements. Therefore He put His plan into action. He sent His Son, the perfect man to rescue us from the penalty of sin. Jesus however is a gentleman. He will not force Himself upon you. He gently knocks on the door of your heart until you open the door of your heart and invite Him in.
This beautiful and mysterious experience of being “born again” is simple and complex all at the same time. Simple for us, because all that is needed from us is a willing and sincere heart that recognizes our sinful condition and our need for Jesus. Once we communicate to Him and invite Him into our heart to reside there, and become Lord of our life, He has promised to never leave us or forsake us.
The mystery and complexity of being “born again” is Spiritual. The work of the Holy Spirit is awesome because He is the one that begins to change our hearts. It is His job to conform us into the image of Jesus. Once we give Him permission He will change us into a new man/woman. Who can explain how this is possible? Who can explain how the Spirit of the Living God can dwell within us? But then nothing is impossible with God.
When this amazing transformation takes place we realize that once we were blind...but now we can see. Once we were deaf...but now we can hear. Once we were dead men walking...but now we are alive for evermore. Because the work of the Holy Spirit is to lead us into all truth, the Bible i.e. the word of God becomes alive and understandable. All things become new because we have become a new man in Christ Jesus.
If you question whether or not you have been “born again,” you have not! A born again person knows that they have had an experience with God and their spirit witnesses that the Holy Spirit is at work in their lives.
The “born again” experience is available to anyone that wants it. It is a free gift that may cost you everything. Things that you love you may end up hating. People that love you may end up hating you. Your life may be turned right side up and there just might be a great fall out. Even so, this treasure of the very essence of God that is deposited within the heart of man brings far more satisfaction than anything or anyone that this world has to offer. Everything in this world grows dim compared to the glory that is revealed in Him.
If you think you are ready to let go of living your life your own way and are ready to let the Lord Jesus take control of your life then just bow your head and humble yourself by praying the following prayer.
Father God, I come before you this day confessing that in many ways I have missed the mark and have sinned against you and the people in my life that I love the most. There are things in my life that I just cannot get free from. I want to be free from the bondage of sin. I want to have a personal relationship with the God of creation. I have been told that you Jesus stand at the door of my heart knocking. Today I open the door of my heart and I invite you Jesus to come into my heart and take control of my life. I want you to be Lord of my life and I want you to teach me Your ways. Come Holy Spirit and fill me now! Amen
