Spring House Cleaning-Part 2
It is the preparation for the feast of unleavened bread that we are going to cover first because the preparation for it began before Passover. Because there was to be no leaven in any of the dwellings, a complete house cleaning took place during the week prier to the holiday. Every nook and cranny was swept clean. The entire house had to be spotless; no leaven was to be found any where. This custom of cleaning the house from top to bottom before Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread is where “spring housecleaning” originated.
It was customary that when the house was considered to be free of all leaven that the children were to make an inspection to see if they could find any leaven any where. Now it was a tradition to hide a little leaven under the cupboard for the children to find.
When Israel was in rebellion, the appointed feasts were neglected. However, during the years of Jesus' earthly ministry, Israel kept the feasts of the Lord. This Feast of Unleavened Bread represents Yeshua the Bread of Life, who though He had no sin, became sin for us on the cross of Calvary. The artist of our souls was painting a picture for us. Let’s take a deeper look at the artistry that is contained in this painting.
If we look deeper we will see that the lamp that is lighted is the word of God that is a lamp to our feet and lights our path, exposing our sin. The leaven or sin that is exposed by the light is sweep by a feather onto a wooden spoon. He has promised to cover us with His feathers and that we can find trust under His wings. We are also told that when Messiah comes, there will be healing in His wings. The feathers of a dove represent the Holy Spirit who sweeps our sin away. The wooden spoon is made from a tree as was the execution stake known as the cross of Calvary made from a tree and set outside the city. It was the place where our sin was swept away. When Yeshua was taken down from the cross He was wrapped in a linen cloth and taken to the tomb. The communal fire that was outside consumed the linen, the leaven and the wooden spoon of every family in that community. It represented the sacrifice of the Lamb and that the fire of God or His judgment was upon the Lamb so that mankind would not experience the fire when they accepted Messiah as their sacrificial Lamb.
Well Jesus did a little housecleaning Himself just before Passover and The Feast of Unleavened Bread. The search for leaven began in His Father’s house. While the Jews were sweeping their houses clean, Jesus went into the temple courts and with His whip He began to sweep the house of His Father clean. Scripture tells us this: Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the moneychangers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers' money and overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, "Take these things away! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!" As we travel with Jesus through this Passover season we will see many more of the ways in which He was the fulfillment of these spring feasts.5
Perhaps it might be wise if each of us consider doing a little spring cleaning ourselves. Since the day of Pentecost the body of the Messiah has become the temple where His Spirit dwells. Scripture tells us: Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.6 During this season of remembrance, let each of us examine our temple and sweep the house of God clean. Let’s be sure that no leaven can be found there.
My Father in Heaven, it is the blood sacrifice of your son Yeshua (Jesus) that washes my sin away. Thank you that you sent your Son to take the punishment for my sin, so that I might be reconciled to you. Thank you that on the cross Yeshua took my every sin, past, present and future and they were nailed to the tree. Thank you that forgiveness is mine just for the asking, that there is nothing that I can do to earn forgiveness and your salvation, because it is a free gift. I accepted this gift that you have given me of salvation because Yeshua paid the price that I could not pay. I thank you that it is His shed blood that washes my sin away and keeps me clean day by day. Examine this temple of yours that is my heart, and if you find any leaven there, sweep it away so that your home remains undefiled and a place where your Holy Spirit dwells. Amen

The father of his household would light a candle or an oil lamp and with his children they would go looking for the leaven. Once the children found the leaven, the father would sweep up the leaven with a feather. He would sweep it on to a wooden spoon and then wrap the leaven and the wooden spoon in a linen cloth. The linen cloth with its leaven and wooden spoon would be taken outside and thrown into a community bond fire. This was done year after year until its fulfillment in Yeshua our Messiah.
