This is the third study on “remez”, the Hebrew way of communicating. For an understanding of the meaning of remez and how Yeshua used it, a study of the two previous studies is recommended.
The following scriptures are the emphasis of our study. Last week we explored the “manna from heaven hidden in plain sight” concerning the word shofar. This week we will look at “the times and the dates”, and “The Day”.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18, For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a rousing cry, with a call from one of the ruling angels, and with God’s shofar: those who died united with Messiah will be the first to rise; then we who are left still alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we will always be with the Lord. So encourage each other with these words.
1 Thessalonians 5: 1-4 But you have no need to have anything written to you, brothers, about the times and dates when this will happen; because you yourselves well know that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people are saying, “Everything is so peaceful and secure.” Then destruction will suddenly come upon them, the way labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there is no way they will escape.
We are living in a time in history that is unprecedented. Never before have so many prophecies concerning our Lord’s return been fulfilled and these same said prophecies are making headline news. We must stay AWAKE and look at these end times with Hebraic eyes.
In studying the great shofar last week, we learned that Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement is a significant day to keep an eye on. This week we will explore more about this biblical holiday. There are several names and idioms for Yom Kippur besides the day of atonement. It is throughout the scriptures referred to as “the Day”, “the Day of the Lord”, or the Great Day (capital D). It is also referred to as “Face to Face”, “The Fast”, “Neilah” (the closing of the gates) and “Shofar HaGadol” the Great Shofar, as we learned last week.
Reference to Yom Kippur can be found in:
Leviticus 23:27, 31-32
On exactly the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement…for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before the Lord your God… You shall do no work at all. It is to be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places. It is to be a Sabbath of complete rest to you, and you shall humble your souls; on the ninth of the month at evening, from evening until evening you shall keep your Sabbath.
But you have no need to have anything written to you, brothers, about the times and dates when this will happen; because you yourselves well know that the Day of the Lord will come.
Let’s think Hebrew, “remez” which infers a deeper hidden meaning, here with Paul, in his address in 1 Thessalonians 5: 1-4 where he says:
Based on “remez”, and taking into consideration the various names I sighted for Yom Kippur, one of which was the Day. I believe Paul was saying this: but you my Jewish brothers and sisters are well aware of all of the biblical holidays. You have no need for me to instruct you as to the times and the dates because you are very well acquainted with the appointed times and dates that the Lord our God has set for us from our Torah. You are well aware the Day of the Lord, that Day of His return, will come on a special and significant Yom Kippur.
We now, in my opinion, have two signs pointing to Yom Kippur in some year, as the possible day of our Lord's return. They are:” the great shofar” and “the Day.” We will be looking at more “manna from heaven hidden in plain sight” in the future.
I discovered the following interesting information after I had drawn my own conclusions about Yom Kippur based on the various works that I had studied. My favorite work is by Edward Chumney who authored The Seven Festivals of the Messiah.
According to Barney Kasdan in his book God’s Appointed Times, the rabbis speculated that Messiah would appear on a very special Yom Kippur in the Year of Jubilee. Taking into consideration the 1 year cycle of readings in the synagogue, it was very likely that when Jesus stood up to read Isaiah 61 and proclaim His Messiahship, it was on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
The Spirit of Adonai is upon me; therefore he has anointed me to announce Good News to the poor: he has sent me to proclaim freedom for the imprisoned and renewed sight for the blind, to release those who have been crushed, to proclaim a year of the favor of Adonai…
Kaskan goes on to say that many scholars have concluded “not only that Yeshua (Jesus) was presenting a dramatic message about his Messiahship, but that this event actually took place at a Yom Kippur service. This view is also mentioned in The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, by Edersheim.
Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement has throughout Jewish history been considered to be the most Holy of days on the biblical calendar. It is on that day, once a year that the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies to make atonement for the sins of the nation. This foreshadowed what Yeshua, our High Priest would do for us.
It is very possible that on Yom Kippur Yeshua, (Jesus) stood in the synagogue proclaiming His messiahship and announcing that He is our Atonement on the day of Atonement. Yet many missed His first coming. The rest of Isaiah 61 is still to be fulfilled, let us be awake and watching and not be numbered among those that will be surprised by His second coming that will be like "a thief in the night". Scriptures for additional study on Yom Kippur are: Leviticus 16 and take a look at Leviticus 23 because it lists all of the feasts.
