Bridal Consent - Step 5 Previous Lesson
The Bride must give her consent.
When Rebekah was chosen for Isaac, she had to be in agreement and give her consent to leave her family and be joined in marriage to Isaac. The bride is not to be forced into the marriage. When God betrothed Himself to Israel on Mount Sinai, Israel consented to be married to God. They were not forced to follow after God, and although Israel committed adultery time and time again, God has never divorced Israel.
There are many accounts, where this was not the case. Even today young women are forced into marriages against their own will. It should never be!
Gen 24:57-58 (NKJV) So they said, "We will call the young woman and ask her personally." 58 Then they called Rebekah and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" And she said, "I will go."
Messiah will never force Himself upon the bride that He loves so much. She must come willingly. Even when we are not willing at first, the Holy Spirit will continue to woo us and convict us of our need to be married to Him. When you hear Him whisper in your ear, “Will you marry me”? You must give your consent. As for me, “I WILL! I WILL! I WILL!

When a Jewish woman was selected to be the bride by the Father of the Groom, and asked to marry the son, it was up to her to say “I will”. She must willingly submit her will to be his bride. Those arranged marriages where the young woman is forced into it against her will is not the pattern of marriage that is sanctioned by God. Although these marriages were sometimes pre-arranged by the parents, the bride must be willing and in agreement with the arrangement.
